Some interesting reading

Just to make sure we've covered the basics, here's the Wikipedia article on augmented reality and a tutorial in Flash CS4, for some insight into the design process and the code.


On a different note, I'm personally still very interested in implementing some narrative in the project. It doesn't have to be a story, per se. Nor something completely vague and artsy. There are many possibilities. Here's an example of experimental storytelling using symbolic language:"a series of web-based artworks that mix the personal lives of the authors and political and social commentary with the mythical texts of the Bible."
For educational purposes, here's some thoughts on games, interactive experiences, their limitations and their potential, from the same authors.

    I certainly agree with you about the narrative, although we need to do it in a way that works, so the AR is apart of the narrative rather than just a gimmick.

  2. I had a wee look round the web for some stuff on combining AR and narritive, got this interesting quote, it's talking about virtual reality rather that AR but i think the point still has a bearing on what we are looking at.

    "virtual environments constitute a revolutionary new medium, and therefore the techniques of earlier media, such as film and stage production, are no longer relevant" (in designing story-based experiences)

  3. I had a look at the glasses mentioned in that article of Iain's. The cheapest i've found so far are these ones; http://www.vuzix.com/iwear/products_camar.html

    It's $500...

    The 'iWear CamAR' on its own is $150, but you can basically do the same thing with a webcam and a headband, maybe some duct tape.

  4. I agree with you both, we'll need to reinvent narrative in a way, to take full advantage of the technology we'll be using. I do have some ideas floating, but nothing solid yet.

    Of course, we need to see what messages we want to express first and where we want to go with the game, interactivity-wise before we get to the actual storytelling.

  5. That would be awesome!
    just thinking about the different devices, glasses, mobile, computer + web cam. unless someone has a mobile device we can put the software onto i get the feeling the computer would be the easy way to express what ever it is that we come up with.
    only a thought though!
